The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
