Greek Police Boost Security In Response to Protests Targeting Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic authorities have significantly increased protective protocols at multiple major harbors in an initiative to keep demonstrators from reaching a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an eleven-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Protests Prompt Enhanced Security

These protective measures at the Peloponnesian ports followed earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata recently. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after area inhabitants organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Civilian, unarmed civilians are being killed."

Passenger Experience and Popular Sentiment

Aboard the ship, travelers observed as demonstrators in Kalamata yelled: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who spent the summer organizing anti-war protests across Greece, stated: "Those Israelis who approve of the policies of their administration aren't welcome here."

International Background and Diplomatic Ties

A foreign policy analyst clarified: "Due to close location and our longstanding relationships with the Arab nations, the average Greek is more responsive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the average European from central or northern regions."

"Greece is in a challenging situation," he elaborated. "Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for most European states."

Economic and Travel Consequences

National figures indicate that more than 600,000 Israeli travelers visited Greece in 2024, with estimates of increased visitation this year. This significant arrival highlights the significantly enhanced ties between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Partnership and Geographic Factors

For the Greek government, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to regional rival Turkey but also offers the additional advantage of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to risk its relations with Israel," stated the analyst. "However from a ethical standpoint we must be more embracing, more balanced, more resolved to demonstrate the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and International Reaction

The extent of the Greek protest movement has surprised Israeli authorities. In recent months, the state's external affairs office advised tourists to keep discreet, while domestic press characterized Athens as a "paradise lost" due to anti-Israeli graffiti showing up on buildings in the downtown area.

Victor Eliezer of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece shared apprehension: "Naturally we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can so easily become discriminatory."

Upcoming Events and Demands

Increasingly, critics have focused on Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to demand the closure of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO facility that following the start of war in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US military ships, combat aircraft and boats destined for Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," stated a movement organizer. "Our central requirement, now, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
