Intense gales attaining velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households experiencing outages and forced officials to call off more than 100 flights, according to regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in key areas such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been encouraged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Extensive Impact and Emergency Response

This outage appears to be affecting households mostly in the southern region, although officials say that power was being restored progressively.

Regional news have stated that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, whereas power lines and trees have been toppled by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights to and from the urban area have been cancelled because of the winds, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate emergency management operations.

But the extreme weather has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Comparable winds are also sweeping the nearby nation, causing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have issued fire bans for fear of forest fires.
