Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
New research indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
