Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
