The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
